What happens when Jesus gets too close? What happens when Jesus threatens our power or control? What happens when Jesus leads us where we don’t want to go?  I think the natural human tendency is to attack Jesus. We look for some way to discredit Him so we don’t have to give Him His rightful rule in our lives. In Matthew 22:15, consider the response of the religious leaders to Jesus.Â
Â
15Then the Pharisees went and plotted together how they might trap Him in what He said.Â
Â
Why were the Pharisees trying to trap Jesus in His words? Jesus scared them. They were afraid of His rising popularity. They were afraid they’d lose their position and power with the masses. The Pharisees plan of tripping Jesus in His words never worked.  In the end, the Pharisees resorted to perjury and execution to get rid of Jesus and to hold on to their power. But God used these desperate acts to accomplish His will. We never win when we fight against God. Our plans to discredit Him never work. Since I know I can’t win an outright fight against Jesus, when I want to buck His rightful rule in my life, I go passive. I just ignore Him, but that doesn’t work either. What do you do when you don’t want to follow Christ’s leading in your life? I pray that God’s Spirit would lead us in submitting to Christ instead of trying to fight Him.
