If I’m ever tempted to doubt Jesus’ humanity, Jesus’ demonstration of anger and emotion reminds me that He was fully human. In Matthew 16:22, after Jesus told the disciples of His impending crucifixion, Peter tried to dissuade Jesus from enduring the cross.Â
Â
22Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “God forbid it, (the crucifixion) Lord! This shall never happen to You.”Â
Â
Look how Jesus responds in verse 23.Â
Â
23But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.”
Â
Why was Jesus so sharp with Peter? I believe Jesus agonized over the thought of enduring the cross. The last thing he needed was one of His friends encouraging Him to avoid the cross. I’m sure Jesus asked the Father many times, “Is there any other way?” What is Peter’s problem? He wants the glory without the suffering. And, really, Peter’s problem is my problem. I want God’s glory at no cost. I’d like Christ’s character and values in my life at no cost. Even though I’ve been following Christ for 30 years, I still chafe when I suffer for following Him. Lord Jesus, help me top set my mind on God’s interests not my interests
